Alistar wins by reaching a priority target, chaining Headbutt and Pulverize, then using Unbreakable Will to survive the commitment while his team follows. Counter him by denying clean combo range, peeling the target he reaches, and refusing to waste major damage into his ultimate.
Quick Counter
Best counter type: Engage-range discipline, peel, target switching, and post-ultimate punishment
Biggest danger: A carry being caught by the Headbutt–Pulverize chain with enemy follow-up ready
Best defensive response: Keep peel range around likely targets and stop tunneling damage into Alistar during Unbreakable Will
Best punish window: After his combo is spent or when Unbreakable Will ends
Fight plan: Deny the clean entry, protect the caught target, redirect damage during his ultimate, then punish once his durability window expires.
What Alistar wants
A priority target within reliable combo range.
Several enemies close enough for Pulverize to control more than one player.
Immediate allied follow-up after he commits.
Opponents who spend their highest-value damage into Unbreakable Will instead of attacking a better target.
How to beat Alistar
Respect the distance from which Alistar can suddenly start the combo. Carries should not stand where one forward movement gives him a free engage.
When he reaches someone, peel the enemy follow-up as much as Alistar himself. His crowd control creates the opening, but teammates usually provide the lethal damage.
Do not tunnel into Unbreakable Will unless finishing him is clearly realistic. Switch to a vulnerable damage dealer or create space while the reduction is active.
After the combo and ultimate are spent, pressure aggressively. Alistar’s threat drops sharply between major control cycles.
Best counter tools
Range that forces Alistar to cross space before engaging.
Peel and shields for the target caught by his combo.
Target switching while Unbreakable Will is active.
Sustained pressure after his crowd-control cycle is spent.
Power spikes
Early: His basic combo already punishes careless positioning and isolated targets.
Mid: Grouped fights make multi-target Pulverize and coordinated follow-up much more dangerous.
Late: His engage remains reliable, but better defensive tools and disciplined target switching make deep commitments more punishable.
Key abilities to track
Headbutt + Pulverize: This is the reliable engage sequence. Maintaining correct spacing and immediate peel around the intended target reduces how much the combo accomplishes.
Unbreakable Will: The ultimate makes Alistar an inefficient focus target for a limited window. Target switching preserves damage for something that can actually die.
Best items into Alistar
Quicksilver Enchant: Useful for carries when Alistar’s control or layered enemy crowd control prevents immediate escape.
Stasis Enchant: Can deny the enemy follow-up damage after Alistar creates a successful engage.
Black Cleaver: A strong physical option for suitable champions when the enemy frontline has enough armor to justify sustained shredding.
Common mistakes
Standing within easy combo distance with no peel nearby.
Using every damage cooldown on Alistar during Unbreakable Will.
Ignoring the enemy carry following his engage.
Failing to pressure after his combo is already spent.
