Zed wins by creating a short isolated burst window, marking a priority target with Death Mark, then using his shadows to deal damage while making retaliation awkward.
Quick Counter
Best counter type: Armor, Stasis, grouping, and reliable peel
Biggest danger: Being isolated when Death Mark is available
Best defensive response: Save Stasis or hard peel for his all-in instead of spending it on poke
Best punish window: After Living Shadow is committed and cannot reposition him
Fight plan: Stay near peel, deny the clean Death Mark target, survive the mark window, then punish the exit shadow.
What Zed wants
A side angle or isolated target where teammates cannot immediately peel him.
To force a defensive cooldown with poke before committing Death Mark.
To place Living Shadow where it threatens damage and also gives him a safe exit.
Low-health targets, because Contempt for the Weak makes his finishing damage more reliable.
How to beat Zed
Track Living Shadow more closely than his poke. When the shadow is unavailable, Zed has fewer safe ways to enter, redirect his abilities, or escape.
Do not give him a clean isolated target. Zed becomes much less comfortable when the marked player can immediately receive shields, crowd control, or return damage from teammates.
Hold your defensive tool for Death Mark when possible. Using Stasis, a major shield, or displacement too early often gives Zed the exact second window he wants.
After he reappears from Death Mark, focus on where his shadows are. His escape route is often more predictable than the initial engage.
Best counter tools
Point-and-click or fast hard crowd control that can catch him after he appears.
Shields, damage reduction, and burst protection that survive the Death Mark window.
Champions comfortable grouping tightly enough to protect a carry without giving up all pressure.
Reliable reveal or zone control around his likely exit paths.
Power spikes
Early: Before his full combo is online, Zed is easier to pressure if Living Shadow is down.
Mid: This is usually his most dangerous roaming and pick window. Isolated targets are expensive mistakes.
Late: He can still delete a carry, but coordinated peel, armor, and grouped positioning make his job harder than in scattered fights.
Key abilities to track
Living Shadow: This is the cooldown that changes how safely Zed can threaten you. If he spends it aggressively and cannot swap back, his punish window opens.
Death Mark: The important objective is not always avoiding the initial cast; it is denying the damage Zed wants to stack before the mark pops. Stasis and immediate peel are strongest here.
Best items into Zed
Plated Steelcaps: Efficient physical-damage protection when your champion can use defensive boots.
Stasis Enchant: One of the cleanest answers to Death Mark because it can erase much of the damage window before the detonation.
Guardian Angel: Useful on physical carries that still need offensive stats but cannot afford to die to the first all-in.
Common mistakes
Standing alone in fog or on a side angle while Death Mark is available.
Using Stasis or your main defensive cooldown on harmless poke.
Chasing the visible Zed without checking where his shadows are placed.
Building only damage after he has shown he can kill you in one rotation.
Fight them in this order
1. Identify who Zed most wants to mark and keep peel range around that player.
2. Do not panic on the first shadow poke; track whether Living Shadow remains available.
3. When Death Mark lands, use defensive cooldowns to reduce the follow-up damage rather than only reacting to the detonation.
4. Crowd control Zed when he becomes targetable, then punish his exit path instead of scattering after him.
